The council of clan leaders of Lango has unveiled new sets of outfits for clan leaders. This is in preparation for the much-anticipated coronation of Won Nyaci Elect Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune scheduled for 2nd November 2024.
The 4 sets of uniforms each with different purposes will officially be used starting on the coronation day. The uniforms were on Friday presented before the council of clan leaders [Owitong].
The attires are a black gown for burials, grey for council meetings, cream for cabinet members and blue for the judicial arm of the council [Itogo Adwong].
The chairperson of the regalia sub committee for the coronation who is also the clan leader of Bako Pelkori Apwor Peter Okello Oyo said each of the four sets of gowns has a specific significance in Lango.
He said the blue color signifies peace, grey signifies the color of the Lango totem [Rhino] and cream is to light for the future.
In the past, Okello Oyo said Lango clan leaders used to wear shorts and vests with open shoes made from vehicle tires for traditional ceremonies.
Recently, the same council approved the same outfits for use on the day of performing cultural rituals [1st November 2024] on Eng. Odongo Okune at Tegot Otuke where Lango first settled after coming from Abyssinia in Ethiopia dating back to 1600AD.

Speaking at the Friday council meeting, the Paramount Chief Elect Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune commended the clan leaders for their steadfast thinking and ideas which are geared towards having a new start for the restoration of Lango’s lost traditions.
Odongo confessed that several times, he was lashed at several times when he was seen wearing ‘kanzu’ because it is presumed to be other tribes’ cultural attires.
“We are laying a new firm foundation for Lango cultural revival which will last thousands of years. We have not inherited anything from the previous leadership which calls for proactive thinking,” Odongo said.
He added that the restorations should not only stop at attires but also extend to preserving Lango language and writing skills which he said is facing threats of depletion.
“Now that we are approving these attires, we should also think about registering its copy rights with the Uganda Registration Service Bureau to stop its duplication by other tribes in the country,” he added.
During the same council meeting, Counsel Patrick Okwir was unanimously approved to be the official interim Spokesperson for Lango Cultural Institution up to 2nd November 2024 following his appointment by Eng. Odongo Okune.
Coronation
The Paramount Chief Elect Eng. Odongo Okune urged the clan leaders to support the national coronation committee with resource mobilization to enable the smooth facilitation of the already approved Shs2.8 billion budget.
“So far, the committee chaired by the government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua is making tremendous progress because they have approached most of the government offices to solicit for financial support, let’s be close to them to give all forms of support required,” Odongo appealed.
Odongo also informed the clan leaders and the people of Lango to prepare to receive a number of high-profile guests from within the country and outside Uganda because several dignitaries including foreign Kings, cultural leaders and other leaders have responded positively to invites sent to them.
Recently, the coronation committee was boosted with financial support from intuitions like; ministry of works and transport, Uganda road fund, Uganda Airlines, Patriotic League of Uganda, Centenary Bank, Diamond Trust Bank, Directorate of Immigration and Citizenship, Bank of Uganda and UNESCO among others.
The team has also organized a fund-raising dinner at Ndeere cultural center in Kampala on the 31st August to raise funds for the coronation and the dinner will be presided over by the Prime Minister of Uganda Robina Nabanjja.
