PLU President General Muhoozi to visit the fishing community in Amolatar

This demand was made by the fishing community in Amolatar during a visit from the MK Movement, also known as the Patriotic League of Uganda.

In a meeting convened by their representative, the community, through its leaders, they expressed a desire to assume control of the lake’s management to prevent misuse. Geoffery Ocen Kiring, LC V chairperson on representing the fishermen, stated that the fishing community has endured significant hardships and requires compensation.

Moses Okot Bitek urged voters to avoid supporting individuals who do not advocate for their interests and pledged to continue fighting for the community.

Moses Okot Bitek reiterated the need for collective action, urging the community to stand firm in their demands for justice and fair treatment. “Together, we can ensure that our voices are heard,” he said, urging everyone to mobilize for the visit.

Hon. David Kabanda, the Secretary General of the PLU, pledged to address the atrocities occurring in the lake and to advocate for its proper management.

General Kitunzi, the leader of the fifth division, acknowledged the atrocities committed by the army and issued an apology on its behalf.

He stated that the former FPUs acted recklessly and failed to adhere to their training, condemning their actions.

He emphasized the importance of restoring trust between the military and the fishing community, noting that the army’s role is to protect and serve the citizens, not to become a source of fear or hardship.

General Kitunzi assured the community that measures would be put in place to prevent future misconduct and to ensure that the rights and livelihoods of the fishermen are respected.

In response to the community’s grievances, PLU Team led by Hon. David Kabanda, announced plans for a comprehensive assessment of the lake’s management practices.

He stated that it is essential for local communities to have a voice in the management of their resources, and expressed his commitment to working collaboratively with the fishermen to develop sustainable fishing practices that would benefit everyone involved.

The meeting concluded with calls for unity among the fishermen and their leaders, as they prepared for General Muhoozi’s visit.

Community members were encouraged to present their concerns and ideas during the upcoming visit, with the hope that it would lead to tangible changes in their circumstances.

As preparations for the visit ramped up, the atmosphere in Amolatar shifted from one of despair to cautious optimism, with many residents’ hopeful that this engagement with the PLU leadership could mark a turning point for their community and its relationship with the authorities.
