
Top political leaders in Amolatar can now rest easy following the arrest of a notorious social media blogger, Emma Opeto, who had been spreading hate speech and defamatory content about them across various WhatsApp platforms. Opeto is a native of Cakwara Sub-County in Kyoga North County, Amolatar District. He has long been accused of using his blogging platform to blackmail several politicians in the region.
According to reliable reports, he was hired by one of the politicians to smear and discredit various political figures in Amolatar District, including Felix Adupa Ongwech, a parliamentary hopeful for Kioga County; incumbent MP Hon. Junior Moses Okot Bitek; and Amolatar District LCV Chairman Geoffrey Ocen Kiring and journaists in Amolatar.
The politician who allegedly recruited Opeto and a group of young men to spread harmful propaganda and slander against those opposing his agenda is also expected to be investigated.
Amolatar District Chairperson Geoffrey Ocen Kiring expressed his gratitude to the police for their intervention, stating that Opeto’s arrest should serve as a deterrent to others who might misuse social media for blackmail in the future.
MP Okot Bitek, speaking from Gulu, confirmed that he had reported Opeto to parliamentary police, and investigations are ongoing. He pledged to support the case with evidence to ensure justice is served.
In a related development, Felix Adupa Ongwech confirmed that he had lodged complaints against individuals spreading false information to undermine his reputation and emphasized his desire for justice.
As of press time, a renowned Amolatar police officer with a UPDF background was reportedly making desperate attempts to secure Opeto’s release, but his pleas were ignored at the Flying Squad headquarters in Kireka. Opeto was this evening 29th.August 2024 presented at Amolatar central police staion.
