On January 22, 2024, the inauguration of the Obanga Amio Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) took place in Bung Teduka cell, within Aduku town council.
The event was graced by Rev. Fr. Canon Vincent Ogwang, Dean of St. John’s Peter’s Cathedral Church West Lango, who addressed a pressing issue facing many savings groups in Kwania district: the need to eliminate indiscipline for sustainable growth.
In his address, Rev. Ogwang highlighted the challenges that have led to the disintegration of numerous savings groups, primarily stemming from infidelity and poor financial management.
He urged the members of Obanga Amio to uphold integrity and transparency, urging them to focus on their primary objective: alleviating poverty in their community. “To achieve growth and stability,” he stated, “it is crucial to avoid distractions, especially those associated with political influences that can derail our collective goals.”
Tom Ogwal, the councilor for Teduka ward, echoed these sentiments, shedding light on the unfortunate consequences of indiscipline among group members.
He reported that many households in Kwania have been embroiled in domestic violence, often rooted in the personal conflicts arising from infidelity.
Ogwal called on the leaders within the various savings groups to take firm action, suggesting that members engaging in adulterous behavior should be expelled to maintain the integrity of these associations.
In response to the call for accountability, Acato Moris, the Governor of Obanga Amio VSLA, reassured the gathering of the group’s commitment to fostering a disciplined environment.
He shared that they have established specific rules aimed at addressing the behavior of undisciplined members.
Additionally, he revealed plans for future projects, including purchasing tents and chairs, underscoring their dedication to enhancing the capabilities of the association while working towards poverty alleviation.
The benefits of such associations were highlighted by Joyce Okello, a business owner and dedicated member of Obanga Amio.
She passionately shared her positive experiences with the group, encouraging others to recognize and harness the potential of such savings initiatives.
According to Okello, being part of the VSLA has significantly empowered her, providing both financial support and a sense of community.
The Obanga Amio Village Savings and Loan Association was founded on November 15, 2023, with an initial membership of 40 individuals. Currently located on Market Street in the Aduku town council area of Kwania, the association has successfully built a loan portfolio exceeding 5 million.
This financial growth, coupled with a strong governance framework, positions Obanga Amio as a beacon of hope for other savings groups in the district.
As Kwania district navigates the challenges of discipline and financial management, the lessons from the Obanga Amio VSLA serve as a crucial reminder that integrity and focus are vital ingredients for any collective effort aiming for success.
Through the commitment of its members and leadership, the association not only aspires to financial growth but also aims to build a healthier, more cohesive community.
